Override Christie and Support the NJ Pay Equity Act

It’s time to override Christie for Equal Pay.

Will you tell your Senator to stand firm in his or her support for Equal Pay and vote to override Christie’s veto? The NJ Pay Equity Act passed with overwhelming, veto-proof, bi-partisan support earlier this year. Six Republican Senators voted in favor of the bill, which would give women formidable tools to combat pay discrimination and remedy a deep-rooted injustice. We need those six Senators to continue to stand up for their female constituents and not to cave to Chris Christie’s anti-woman position. Women in NJ still earn less than men, 80 cents on the dollar. Women of color earn substantially less. Wage discrimination is a major reason why. With more and more women supporting their families, protecting women from wage discrimination is incredibly urgent.

Chris Christie has never had one of his vetoes overridden. But now with the NJ Pay Equity Act, our Senators have a choice – they can stand with NJ’s most unpopular governor in history, or they can stand with women and vote for equal pay for equal work. Tell your Senator: Stand with women and override Christie’s Pay Equity veto. The NJ Pay Equity Act will be up for an override vote on Monday, Dec 19th. We need help generating last minute calls and emails to NJ Senators urging them to support the override. As you all know, no override, to date, has succeeded. We hope this will be the first!

(All these Senators, except Senator Beck, voted yes on the bill this past spring. We want them to CONTINUE to support the bill, and vote yes, again on the override vote this Monday. Senator Beck voted no in the spring but we hope to have her vote on the override.)

Talking points for calls to Senate Republicans listed below on the Pay Equity override vote this coming Monday.
The bill number is S992.

  • I’m calling to ask that the Senator support the effort to override Christie’s veto of the NJ Pay Equity Act.
  • How is the Senator planning on voting on Monday?
  • (For all but Sen Beck) The NJ Pay Equity Act passed with strong bi-partisan support earlier this year, thanks to you and 5 other Republican Senators. That means women have a SHOT at seeing
this bill made law this year. THANK YOU!
  • But we need you to continue to stand firm on their support for Equal Pay and women. We are urging him / her to vote yes to support the override of Christie’s veto of this bill on Monday. (For Beck, just say you are calling to urge her to vote yes, as she voted no the last time.)
  • The bill would give women formidable tools to combat pay discrimination and remedy a deep-rooted injustice that prevents women, and their families, from achieving economic security.
  • Without your support, the Governor’s veto would leave women, who are facing wage discrimination, lost in the loopholes of existing law, unable to remedy wage discrimination.
  • We urge The Senator to continue to stand up for their female constituents and not cave to Chris Christie’s anti-woman position on this bill.
