BlueWaveNJ commends the legislature for listening and responding to the chorus of concerned voters and experts who testified against the redistricting resolution. We thank the leadership for pulling the resolution from this Monday’s agenda and for agreeing to respond to the testimony presented.
As the many expert witnesses made clear, this fatally-flawed resolution should not be reintroduced. Instead we ask the legislature to go back to the drawing board and include the public in the process. Best practices dictate that an independent, nonpartisan, citizen-led commission is needed to ensure all voices are heard and that the redistricting process is fair, transparent and will withstand the test of time.
Principled progressive and Democrat organizations put protection of our democracy over partisan advantage to achieve yesterday’s outcome. What a stark contrast with Michigan and Wisconsin. As Thursday’s press conference and testimony illustrated, NJ grassroots groups will not accept politics as usual.
Also, a special thank you to the League of Women Voters for providing invaluable guidance and
leadership to the many groups and individuals that were part of this broad coalition.
